Welcome to swimming pool and spa information How can swimming make you sick? Most recreational water illness (RWI) reported is diarrheal illness, which is spread by swallowing contaminated water. In addition, swimming in water contaminated with germs can also cause infections in your eyes, nose, ears, and in cuts and scrapes. People in the pool share the water with everyone else in the pool. If someone with diarrhea contaminates the water, swallowing the water can make people sick. Recreational water can also be contaminated by fecal matter rinsed off of the bodies of swimmers. When people are ill with diarrhea their stool can contain millions of germs. Therefore, swimming when ill with diarrhea can easily contaminate the water and, if the pool water is swallowed, can make you sick. If there is enough disinfectant in the water, given time it will kill all harmful contaminants. Safe water relies on two main factors. The pH and the amount of sanitizer, chlorine works well at the normal pH range. In water outside the normal range you have very different results. At a very low pH chlorine works great, way over active. A high pH generally renders chlorine null, too high pH and the chlorine will do no work. Swim or Spa on the road ? Looking at pool or spa water won't tell you a thing... I recommend investing a few dollars to protect your family and yourself. Pool and spa water testing has never been easier. A simple one dip strip, wait a few seconds, then read the results from the side of the bottle. We think that everyone who swims in an apartment, condominium, hotel or motel swimming pool or spa should get some test strips and use them each time they swim.
